The Month of Sha'ban: The Month of Preparation
The month of Sha'ban approaches slowly. It is not as festive as Ramadan, nor as glorious as the sacred months. But that is precisely where its uniqueness lies. Sha'ban is the month between the two great months—Rajab and Ramadan—and is often overlooked.
In fact, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ greatly honored this month.
Aisyah ra once said that she rarely saw Rasulullah ﷺ fasting as much as in the month of Shaban, except in the month of Ramadan. Not without reason. The month of Shaban is a month of preparation, a month to organize your heart before Ramadan really knocks on the door.
The Month of the Ascension of Good Deeds
In a hadith, Rasulullah ﷺ explained that human deeds are elevated to Allah SWT in the month of Sha'ban. That's why he was happy when his deeds were lifted while fasting.
Imagine, this month is when our deeds are presented to Allah. It's not about how much, but how sincere. Sha'ban invites us to pause, revisit our often-delayed acts of worship, and revise our intentions, which may have become wan.
The Night of Nisfu Sya'ban
In the middle of that month, there is one night that is very famous: the night of Nisfu Sya'ban. This night is full of hope and prayer. Many scholars explain that on this night, Allah SWT bestows forgiveness on His servants who ask sincerely.
Nisfu Sya'ban night is an opportunity to increase prayer, istighfar and self-reflection. Not with euphoria, but with submission.
Preparing Yourself for Ramadan
Sha'ban is like a waiting room before Ramadan. This is where we can start getting used to:
- Get used to sunnah fasting so that your heart and body are more ready to welcome Ramadan.
- Reading the Qur'an: Take time to read the Qur'an, so that your heart feels closer and calmer.
- Improving prayer: Improving prayer, not only on time, but also being more devout in worship.
- Cleanse our hearts from despicable qualities, such as envy and revenge, so that we can welcome the month of Ramadan with a clean and holy soul.
This month teaches us that worship isn't just about the peak, but also about preparation. It reminds us that before Allah bestows the glory of Ramadan, there's a month that invites us to slow down, organize our intentions, and approach more calmly.
Hopefully, in this month of Sha'ban, we will have the opportunity to improve ourselves and hopefully we can meet the Holy Month of Ramadan with a more prepared heart.

“This is a great reminder for all of us.”
