Roots of Knowledge

KH. Muhammad Dhofir bin Ali bin Abdurrahim (deceased)

Caretaker of Al-Mas’udi Islamic Boarding School

KH. Mudhoffir Ali (Alm) was the first teacher of Abuya Mohammad Wahyudi in his long journey of seeking knowledge. Since the fourth grade of elementary school, Abuya had been living and studying at Al-Mas’udi Islamic Boarding School in Pasuruan—a pesantren directly under his care.

He was a prominent Islamic scholar who studied at two major Islamic boarding schools that were highly influential in the history of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago: the Sidogiri Islamic Boarding School in Pasuruan and the Al Hamdaniyah Siwalanpanji Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo.
These two Islamic boarding schools served as places where he gained religious knowledge, formed his character, and fostered spiritual depth and steadfastness in worship.

The Sidogiri Islamic Boarding School, founded in 1718 AD, is known as one of the oldest and most influential Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. Its strong scholarly tradition, disciplined educational system, and atmosphere of sincerity made Sidogiri a crucible where many respected Islamic scholars emerged. It was from this environment that KH. Muhammad Dhofir absorbed the values of sincerity, steadfastness, and independence in his preaching.

Meanwhile, the Al Hamdaniyah Siwalanpanji Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo—established in 1787 CE—was also a place where he deepened his knowledge. This Islamic boarding school is known as one of the oldest centers of Islamic dissemination in East Java and the birthplace of many great Indonesian scholars, including KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, the founder of Nahdlatul Ulama.

At Siwalanpanji, KH. Muhammad Dhofir was forged in a strong tradition of scholarship, high discipline, and the values of simplicity and humility that were inherent in his daily life.

Siwalanpanji Islamic Boarding School has its own unique advantages. In addition to being one of the oldest centers for the dissemination of religious knowledge in East Java, this boarding school is also known for:

  • Students come from various regions and countries, including Arabia and the Philippines.

  • Its robust academic curriculum combines classical Islamic texts with moral development and disciplined worship.

  • His significant historical role gave birth to many important figures in the world of Islamic boarding schools and the Islamic struggle in Indonesia.

KH. Mudhoffir Ali was known as a steadfast figure who cared deeply about nurturing the worship practices of his students. Every night around 3 a.m., he would routinely go around waking the students for tahajjud prayer. Using the gemstone ring on his finger, he gently knocked on the doors of their rooms—a distinctive habit that reflected his care and dedication in guiding their spiritual development.

It was at Al Mas'udi Islamic Boarding School that Abuya first learned the Quran and the science of Tajweed. These skills were taught by a relative of his mentor, KH. Dzulhilmi Ghozali Al-Hafizh, a Quranic expert who is now known as the Grand Imam of the Sunan Ampel Mosque in Surabaya and the Chairman of the Jam'iyyatul Qurro' wal Huffazh (JQH) of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PWNU) in East Java.

The exemplary behavior of KH. Muhammad Dhofir, both in words and deeds, served as the initial foundation for Abuya's character development.
May Allah SWT widen his grave, accept all his good deeds, and elevate his status in His sight. Amen.
Aamiin.

KH. Dzulhilmi Ghozali, Al-Hafizh

Qur’an and Tajweed Teacher

KH. Dzulhilmi Ghozali, Al-Hafizh, was the first teacher who guided Abuya Mohammad Wahyudi in reading and studying the Qur’an and the science of tajweed. Their encounter began when Abuya was in the fourth grade of elementary school and started boarding at Al-Mas’udi Islamic Boarding School in Sukorejo, Pasuruan.

At that time, KH. Dzulhilmi had just returned from his studies in Makkah. With great enthusiasm and dedication, he began teaching the Qur’an to young students, including Abuya. This early mentorship became a crucial foundation in Abuya’s journey in tahfidz and Qur’anic sciences.

After several years, KH. Dzulhilmi moved to Surabaya and became a lecturer at LPBA (Arabic Language Development Institute) at UIN Sunan Ampel. Today, he is widely known as the Grand Imam of Sunan Ampel Mosque in Surabaya and serves as the Head (Rois) of the East Java branch of JQHNU (Jam’iyyatul Qurro’ wal Huffazh Nahdlatul Ulama).

His influence on Abuya runs deep—not only in terms of knowledge but also in his exemplary manners and unwavering commitment to the Qur’an. His figure continues to inspire Abuya in developing Qur’anic education at Pondok Pesantren YAHQI.

KH. Muhammad Naser Abdurrahman

Caretaker and Founder of Madrosatul Alsun

One of the key teachers in Abuya Mohammad Wahyudi’s journey of knowledge was KH. Muhammad Naser Abdurrahman, an expert in Arabic and the founder of Madrosatul Alsun. He studied deeply in Saudi Arabia, especially in the fields of Ilmushout (phonetics) and classical Arabic language.

During three years of studying under his guidance, Abuya received an intensive Arabic language education. Even when the students were still in high school or early university years, the material taught was already at a doctoral level. KH. Muhammad Naser’s precision in teaching grammar, structure, and the deeper nuances of the language earned him great respect among linguists.

Though he lived a simple life, his influence was immense. Many of his students have gone on to become prominent figures in education and dakwah both locally and nationally. Some of them include:

Prof. Akh. Muzakki, M.Ag., Grad.Dip.SEA., M.Phil., Ph.D., Rector of UIN Sunan Ampel, Chairman of the East Java Education Council, and Secretary General of the East Java MUI. Prof. Dr. KH. Muhammad Thohir, S.Ag., M.Pd., Chairman of FAQIH (Forum Amanah Qurro’ dan Huffazh), Dean of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teaching Sciences at UINSA, and a board member of JQH PWNU East Java.

The relationship between Abuya and his teacher remains strong to this day. Not long ago, KH. Muhammad Naser visited YAHQI Islamic Boarding School with his son, Gus Anas. On that occasion, he offered his prayers and blessings for the prosperity and progress of the pesantren. He even agreed to review and correct the YAHQI Method book, particularly the sections on Ilmushout.

For Abuya, the guidance and prayers of KH. Muhammad Naser are a vital means (wasilah) for the success of his mission in education and dakwah. May Allah always protect and bless him. Aamiin.

KH. Muslih Abdoesshomad

Caretaker of Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School

One of the most influential teachers in Abuya Mohammad Wahyudi’s educational journey was the late KH. Muslih Abdoesshomad, caretaker of Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School. For approximately 13 years, Abuya had the opportunity to study directly under his guidance, particularly in the study of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), and received many chains of transmission (sanad) from him.

KH. Muslih was not only a teacher in the academic sense but also a molder of character and spirit. He was known for encouraging his students to become obedient and disciplined (sam’an wa tha’atan), knowledgeable and capable, as well as creative, innovative, and responsive to the demands of the times.

His intellectual outlook was shaped through years of study at several renowned Islamic boarding schools, including: renowned Islamic boarding schools, such as:

  • • Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Tambakberas, Jombang
  • • Teretek Islamic Boarding School, Kediri
  • • Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School, Lasem
  • • Sarang Islamic Boarding School
  • • Al-Falah Islamic Boarding School, Lebak Winongan
  • • and several others.

KH. Muslih also placed strong emphasis on the development of students’ practical skills. Abuya was once assigned by him to represent the students of Pasuruan Regency in a sewing course at the Islamic Center in Surabaya. KH. Muslih entrusted him with managing the school cooperative, training students in Arabic calligraphy, sending them to kitab reading and public speaking (khithobah) competitions, and often offered personal advice by calling students individually to his residence.

One of the most memorable traditions was the Khataman Kitab held every Ramadan, which lasted nearly all day and continued late into the night. KH. Muslih remained steadfast, sitting upright in one position while teaching, even after the students had grown tired. One of the books regularly completed was Ihya’ Ulumuddin, while Usul al-Fiqh was a subject Abuya particularly enjoyed learning from him.

The blessings of KH. Muslih Abdoesshomad’s knowledge and exemplary character continue to shape Abuya’s life to this day. May Allah expand his grave, elevate his rank, and make his lifelong devotion to education a source of unending reward. Aamiin.

KH. Mudjtaba Abdoesshomad

Caretaker of Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School, Sukorejo, Pasuruan

KH. Mudjtaba Abdoesshomad is the younger brother of KH. Muslih Abdoesshomad, and both served as the main caretakers of Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School in Sukorejo, Pasuruan—the place where Abuya Mohammad Wahyudi began his studies at an early age.

Among the students, KH. Mudjtaba is known as a charismatic figure, outspoken in promoting amar ma’ruf nahi munkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil). His bold and direct preaching style earned him the nickname "Macan Panggung" (The Stage Tiger), as he frequently moved from one gathering to another, delivering fiery and passionate sermons.

His scholarly journey was shaped by his studies at several influential Islamic institutions, including:

  • • Sidogiri Islamic Boarding School, Pasuruan
  • • Al-Anwar Islamic Boarding School, Sarang
  • • Darul Hadis Al-Faqihiyah, Malang

This broad educational background deeply influenced his thinking, vision, and approach to nurturing students, including shaping Abuya’s character.

KH. Mudjtaba was a mentor who constantly encouraged students to grow and excel. He often entrusted them with responsibilities in various areas, including organizational leadership, education, and dakwah. He strongly emphasized the importance of writing and producing intellectual work—an invaluable legacy that later empowered Abuya in his service to the community.

His advice has made a strong impression on Abuya and has become a strong motivation for Abuya to continue to struggle, provide broad benefits, and maintain the good name of the pesantren.

Today, one of KH. Mudjtaba’s major mandates to Abuya—his vision for an advanced school within the pesantren—has grown remarkably. The school has become a thriving, competitive educational institution.

Abuya continues to express deep gratitude and prayer for him. The training and mentorship of KH. Mudjtaba remain a fundamental part of Abuya’s personal growth and lifelong mission.
